Mastering

Home Up Pre-Mastering Mastering Stamping One-Off's Silk Screening Thermal Printing

Mastering is required only if the CD's are to be replicated by injection molding. The process involves several steps:

Glass mastering is the process of recording data to a glass disc coated with a photosensitive material.
The glass master is then electroplated with nickel, a process called electroforming.
The metal plate made of nickel is seperated from the glass and is called the metal master or the father.
The father can be cut to size for direct use in the injection molder. It can also serve as the template for a mother from which stampers are formed. Either the father or the stamper is used to mold the CD's which is then ready to be used in the injection molding process.
