One-offs are created by copying data from a computer's hard disk to a CD-Recordable disk using a CD writer pictured below. A CD-R is simply a blank disk that has been pre-manufactured with a groove but without information (imagine an old fashioned vinyl LP with no music in the groove). A laser beam in the writer follows the groove as it burns little holes or "pits" onto the CD-R. The pattern of pits comprises the data that is later read by a CD-ROM drive or another CD reader. After replication, the label is applied to the face of the CD either by Silk Screening or Thermal Printing. |
